Book Blurb:
I met Alessandra at a party. Tried to impress her. Was almost positive I was going to fail.
I think I said something along the lines of, “I’m a Goat called Fish who’s hung like a bull—but not really. I’m actually pretty average.” Smooth. I know. Try not to be jealous.
When she laughed—and I mean, really laughed—I knew she wasn’t like the other girls I’d been meeting on tour. Hell, she wasn’t even in the same stratosphere as those fangirls and gold-diggers.
At one point during the party, Alessandra said, “There’s nothing like a girl’s first love.” I knew she was talking about the first smash hit by my band, 22 Goats. Alessandra said it was the first song she’d heard by us and it “hit her like a ton of bricks.” Ironic, seeing as how I was having the same reaction from being in her presence.
I made it my mission to impress her. Give her the kiss of a lifetime that night. But since I’ve always been the dude with zero game, nothing went according to plan.
I’m not giving up, though. I’m going to win this girl over. I’m done sitting on the sidelines, watching the bad boy getting the girl. This time, the nice guy will finish first. Even if it’s the last thing he’ll do.
My rockstar romance love affair continues! Smitten was such a sweet, feel-good story. I am smitten with Smitten. I've been reading a lot of books with angst in them lately, and don't get me wrong, I love angst, but I needed to give myself a little breather. Sometimes I get too dark and twisty after too much angst. Smitten was the perfect book to read on the opposite end of the spectrum. I think I smiled throughout the entire book. I definitely laughed out loud.
Matthew "Fish" Fishberger and Alessandra Tennison were too cute for words. As soon as I read the blurb and laughed out loud I knew I needed to read this book. I got to know Fish briefly when I read Rockstar by Lauren Rowe. Fish is a member of the band 22 Goats, featured in Rockstar. This book is a standalone, but you'll be more familiar with the characters who appear if you've read the Morgan Brothers Series. Also The Reed Rivers Trilogy. But, personally, I've only read Rockstar and Smitten, and I totally enjoyed both books. I'll definitely be backtracking and reading the rest of the books. I'm hooked on this world.
I feel like Ally and Fish had a unique story. It moved rather quickly which I loved. I was swept away by their romance. Instant connection and chemistry. They bonded and became friends rapidly after discovering their shared sense of humor and love of music. Each layer they uncovered caused them to build a deeper bond. Their deep friendship helped them naturally evolve into a relationship. Of course they had a few speed bumps here and there, but were able to get through each hiccup.
Lauren writes such funny dialogue between the characters. I found myself highlighting so many scenes on my Kindle so I can re-read them and laugh again later. The nicknames the characters have for each other just tickled me. I wanted to hang out with these people in real life! Fish has such a funny, sweet, shy, charming, guy-next door personality. And, as he's described in the book, is a total smoke-show. He's a tattooed, rockstar, hottie. Ally has a similar personality that just meshed with Fish. They were made for each other.
One thing I really enjoyed is, in my opinion, this book had a unique climax. We didn't get the typical miscommunication leads to conflict, followed by epiphany, conflict resolution, and happy-ending. It was so refreshing! Fish and Ally's story was more of a climb. Each scene lead to the next level and the next step. I didn't feel like they jumped backwards at all. The epilogue is a special treat. A precious glimpse into the future that warmed my heart and soul.
This review is a bit shorter than my norm, but that doesn't reflect on the quality of the story at all. I must share, that Lauren Rowe added in a few little surprises for listening pleasure. I was THRILLED! Reading the lyrics versus actually experiencing the song.... Experiencing the song for the win! Thanks for creating such unique stories and sharing these songs with us. It takes the reading experience to another level. I pictured the performances so much clearer. The images (and sounds)in my mind instantly sharpened.
