First and Forever by Jay McLean - "Hard work beats destiny when destiny fails to work hard."

First and Forever by Jay McLean

 Book Blurb:

First and Forever is the second book in the Heartache Duet, and must be read after Heartache and Hope.

There are no more goodnight kisses.
No knocks on windows.
No lengthy text messages.
No late-night phone calls.
And no game day balloons.
There’s just Connor.
And Ava.
Existing in a world filled with nothing but heartache.
While searching the darkness for glimmers of hope.
Because with hope, comes magic.
And magic is forever.

This book begins where Heartache and Hope left off. Ava and Connor aren’t in the best place in their relationship. As teenagers, they both have a lot to learn. Not just about each other but about themselves also. From start to finish I’m pleased to say they definitely grew individually. First and Forever brings them so much closer. It seems like they’ve finally found their stride as friends and as a couple. They’re able to experience some of the best moments. They see happiness and magic. But ghosts from their past rear their ugly heads.
Connor and Ava have a bad habit of internalizing their struggles. It’s very hard to summarize the events in this book without giving away any spoilers. So much happens that it must be experienced. Connor’s past is chasing him, and he hides it from Ava. Ava thinks she discovers what he’s hiding, but she’s so very wrong. He pleads for her belief and trust. And yet, she’s human. She falters. Especially considering the other things that are weighing on her mind to begin with.

Everything changes after life takes a drastic turn for Ava and her family. Connor is blindsided and devastated. He vows to himself that he’ll never give up. Ava will always be his endgame. Time passes. During their time apart, Ava and Connor were able to grow. These two needed to grow through what they were going through. They needed to find themselves before they could function as a couple. You have to be healthy and whole as an individual before you can become a functional part of something bigger.

I truly appreciate the author's decision to face a lot of issues head on with First and Forever. Mental health and well- being is crucial. Seeking help, and finding strength in that, is shown as a key factor in getting them to their happily ever after. It took time, but it did come. It took Connor and Ava some hard work.

This duet was a rollercoaster as a whole. Not one scene was “expected”. I enjoyed the twists, turns, and turmoil. The heartache duet is aptly named as Ava and Connor both experienced so much of it on their journey to “The Happiness”.
