She thinks he’s entitled.
Maybe first impressions don’t always last…
Because Connor Ledger’s about to save her.
He just doesn’t know why.
Heartache and Hope is mature young-adult Sports Romance, 80k full-length novel and is the first book in the Heartache Duet
This was my first book by Jay McClean and I thoroughly enjoyed this experience. The first part of The Heartache Duet sucked me right into the story. Ava’s introduction was heart wrenching, and yet, as the story goes on it became more heart wrenching. I didn’t think it was possible, but each detail of her life, and what happened to her mom made me want to hug Ava. Prior to the incident with her mom she was a regular teenage girl. Now her focus is solely on her family. That’s definitely not typical for a seventeen year old girl.
Ava exists in a fog until one day Connor breaks through. They share a class together, and she hasn’t paid him any attention until one fateful day in class. They’re now partners on an assignment and need to work together. Connor and Ava are adorably awkward until they find some common ground. This shared interest is quirky and provided some laughs also.
Eventually, they realize they’re both interested in the other, but Ava doesn’t want a relationship. She’s very honest with Connor about how she feels. He gets so many brownie points for being understanding. Connor is happy just having Ava in his life regardless if that means they’ll only be friends.
Connor is new to the school and is there on a basketball scholarship. His future and making his dreams come true is riding on his dedication to the sport, but also the team. He also struggles with insecurity and doubts his self worth. When we learn why he’s insecure it about broke my heart. Tears. Chills. Goosebumps. Seriously. Goosebumps broke out on my arms. His story made me want to scream and cry and protect all the children who’ve experienced what he went through. Mostly I mourned for those that weren’t as luck as Connor who didn’t actually survive.
Connor knows there’s a lot more going on at home than Ava says, but she still works to keep a lot hidden. Meanwhile, their friendship inevitably has blossomed into more. Unfortunately, both of them are distracted by their main priorities and this causes a huge rift. Can they get through this? Heartache and Hope had an ending, but I can’t wait to read the next part to see where their journey leads them next. I hope they can find their way back to each other.
