Amara finds herself being taken as payment for her father’s debt to Lorenzo King. Enzo, as he is known by friends and family, is in a dark place and has made it his life’s mission to avenge his mother. He has no qualms about killing anyone who dares to lie, cheat or steal from him. If he shows any weakness, his throne will be at risk. Because of his past, I felt like he took it easy on Amara. I was expecting her to have to physically work off her dad’s debt prior to a relationship developing between them. They did have huge amounts of chemistry and the tension was palpable.
Along with their budding relationship, there’s also the mystery of a potential traitor. The hunt for this person comes to a head a few times throughout the book, but it explodes at the cliffhanger ending. I am not a huge fan of cliffhangers, but this one did it’s job. I need to know what happens next.
I’m a huge fan of Mafia and enemies-to-lovers romance novels, but I feel like this was not dark enough for me and there wasn’t enough angst between Amara & Enzo. By no means was it a light-hearted story, but it fell more towards just being violent. I understand that this is a personal preference and it may be extremely dark and “Mafia” enough for some people. I just expect a book to be full of trigger warnings when it’s in this genre.
Overall, I liked this book. It kept me entertained and roped me into needing the second book of the duet as soon as it’s available.
