Review

Upside Down is book 3 in the Breaking the Rules series. I jumped in at book 3, and prior events are mentioned, but I didn’t get the feeling that I needed full details of those events to appreciate or enjoy the story. As soon as I read the blurb, and learned that Cooper was a straight man questioning his sexuality I knew it was a must read. There’s a certain level of angst I find myself craving in books. This had it all.

Cooper Stanton and Ricky Burrows have known each other for a few years now. Ricky is Cooper’s sister Rebecca’s best friend and business partner. They have a tendency to clash because
Ricky always manages to get under Cooper’s skin. Cooper’s latest relationship has crashed and burned and he’s doing a lot of reflecting and wondering why he just can’t seem to find true love. He wants what his siblings have, true love and connection, but it continues to elude him.

When Cooper shows up single to his brother Sam’s wedding cruise, Ricky asks Cooper some tough questions that make him reflect on himself on a much deeper level. Apparently Ricky has seen something in Cooper that nobody else has. A smoldering chemistry makes itself blatantly obvious as the cruise passes.

What comes next is a journey of discovery for Cooper mostly, but Ricky also. Cooper comes to terms with his self discovery, but some other issues arise that may throw a wrench into their slowly growing relationship. How does a straight man adjust to a new “label”? How does a gay man build something real with someone who’s lived their whole life as a straight man?

This book was such a revelation. A.M. explored such deep emotions and aspects of what the characters experienced. I so love a book that delves deep into the heart and mind of the characters. I like to think I’m an empathetic person, so when I read books that cause me the pain and joy the characters feel, I know I’m reading something truly magical. I also love when books make me think deeper about things I've always thought were straightforward. Upside Down is definitely worth the read.
