With The Hunter, LJ Shen introduces her die-hard fans to a new realm of characters. This is book one in the new series The Boston Belles. I cannot wait for this world to expand through the next installments in the series. My favorite aspect of the series is the ties to the All Saints High series, but also LJ's much-loved standalone novel, Sparrow. We get glimpses of characters we have grown to know and love throughout LJ's books. This soothes my soul. I hate when I finish a book and never "see" the characters again. I'm left wondering what those characters "are doing now." LJ has allowed me to catch little glimpses of oh-that's-where-they-are-now vibes. SWOON! My heart is happy.
Hunter Fitzpatrick first appears in Broken Knight and then in Angry God. He is best friends with Knight Cole and Vaughn Spencer, respectively. In those books you catch glimpses of Hunter's party-boy and zero-f***ks mentality. The scenes with Hunter always had me laughing out loud, and also wanting more of Hunter. His actions made me wonder what his story was and what made him tick. This book answered all of my questions. In Sparrow, we fight our way through a painful, yet beautiful, love story of Troy and Sparrow Brennan. At the end, we get a tiny glimpse at their daughter, Sailor Brennan, in the epilogue of her parent's book.
My goal will always be to provide a summary of the book while still remaining spoiler-free. At the beginning of The Hunter, he finds himself in a compromising situation where he wakes to discover he was filmed having sex with multiple girls from his school. Unfortunately, due to a mixture of drugs and alcohol, he doesn't remember the epic porno he inadvertently starred in.
Hunter is the heir to Royal Pipelines, the biggest oil and gas company in the US. Of course, Hunter is high profile so his video goes viral and lands him in hot water (not just hot but boiling water) with his dad, Gerald. Needless to say, his dad is furious with his youngest male heir. He promises to strike Hunter's name from the will if Hunter doesn't move back to Boston immediately (do NOT pass go do not collect $200→straight to Boston!) and get his act together with the help of a "babysitter."
Enter Sailor. Sailor is a no-nonsense, feisty, strong-willed woman. She is definitely her father's daughter. Sailor was such a strong, female character who wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Sailor Brennan, an archer with Olympics Gold Medals in her eyes, is recruited to be Hunter's babysitter to ensure he stays sober and well-behaved for 6 months' time. Sailor only agrees to the bargain once Hunter convinces her they can mutually benefit each other in a purely platonic way.
At first they can't stand each other, in typical enemies-to-lovers fashion, but soon the chemistry begins to boil over. The sexual tension between them was just off the charts. Explosive. The dialogue and banter just added so much depth to the story. And humor. That's important, too. I lost track of how many times I laughed out loud.
They push and pull at each other constantly. We soon learn Hunter feels his emotions very strongly and is more effected by the actions of his family then he lets on. He's a sensitive guy who strikes before he gets struck. He jokes and downplays his feelings and intelligence to throw people off. He doesn't want anyone to see who he really is, because deep down he's afraid everyone he cares about will always leave him.
Hunter comes across a plot to harm his family and the Royal Pipelines legacy. Not only is he working and going to school, he begins to bust his butt trying to nail the person behind the subterfuge. When he brings the plot to the attention of his father and older brother, Cillian, he finds he must work overtime to prove himself to them. He enlists Sailor (and Troy, of course!) to help him catch the plotter. Hunter begins to fight for something bigger than himself. At the same time he advocates for Sailor and works just as hard with her to make her dreams come true.
We discover more about Hunter and Sailor through each encounter between the hero and heroine. Of course things blow up in unexpected ways for them. Sailor's journey to the Olympics, and during Hunter's quest to expose the treachery within the closest ranks of Royal Pipelines are very rocky. During this landslide, their careful alliance and slowly budding romance falls apart. Around this time we also discover even more explosive secrets and tricks. With everything exposed and out in the open, how will Hunter and Sailor find their way back to each other? Read this book to find out!
