Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.
Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.
Sweet.
Caring.
Charitable.
Quiet.
Fake.
Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.
Who taught her how to laugh.
To live.
To love.
Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.
Gorgeous.
Athletic.
Rugged.
Popular.
Liar.
This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.
But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.
When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.
Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.
Oh. My. Heart. This book was so real and emotional. I have shed some tears over books in the past, but this one.. this one did me in. My goal is to provide you with a review that doesn't give out any spoilers. This book deserves to be experienced personally one-on-one. Each chapter tugged at my heart strings.
To fully experience the beauty of this series, it should be read after reading the five books compiling the Sinners of Saint series. Series release order: Vicious Book 1, Defy Book 0.5, Ruckus Book 2, Scandalous Book 3, Bane Book 4. Broken Knight follows Knight Cole and Luna Rexroth. Knight is the son of Dean and Rosie Cole from Ruckus. Luna Rexroth is the daughter of Trent Rexroth from Scandalous.
LJ Shen has taken threads from each book of the series from Ruckus all the way up through Broken Knight and weaved them together in such a magical way. Just magic. If you haven't read the SOS series, please read it. You will not regret it.
Okay, so here's my recap of the book: Knight Cole and Luna Rexroth have been best friends practically since birth. Knight is a year younger, but he has always protected Luna and everyone knows he loves her. Luna hasn't spoken since she was able due to the trauma of being abandoned by her mother. Luna shares Knight's feelings, but she doesn't trust they can go anywhere due to his public man-whoring ways. There were two Knight Coles. One was mine. The other everyone else's. Luna thinks this early on in the book but doesn't know just how right she is. After seeing and hearing about him with another girl, again, she decides she has had enough.
With encouragement from her stepmother Luna takes some actions to distance herself from Knight a little bit. Knight and Luna push and pull at each other. The story has quite a few moments where they flip back and forth from friends to enemies. Knight needs Luna more than ever, but instead of verbalizing his feelings and opening up to her about what's going on he internalizes everything and chooses to mask and drown his feelings. He's coasting through life. Luna begins to blossom and evolve as a woman.
Eventually their relationship grows, but like all couples they experience hardships and adversity. TO SAY THE LEAST. I refuse to give any spoilers in case you are reading this before reading the book. It is a MUST READ! Some of their conflicts stem from their personal choices, but like life, there are many things that we cannot control. Knight's struggles have grown more blatantly obvious. Now that Luna is no longer a meek, make-no-waves woman she gives him a piece of her mind. Knight can't expect to keep Luna just because they have loved each other for as long as they remember. He must earn her and be deserving of her. Knight must prove himself a worthy partner and show he values himself and Luna.
I am absolutely obsessed with Kindle (not an ad and not sponsored in any way). I read this book and listened to the Audible (also (not an ad and not sponsored in any way) version when I needed to multitask. I had to pause my listening to highlight my favorite lines. There we so many lines that resonated with me on a deeper level. This book touched my soul.
Knight's struggle and character development were so spot on.. I loved him so much. His thoughts, actions and feelings were expressed in such a real, relatable way. Struggles have a way of bringing out the worst in us. And if we're really lucky we can learn and grow from those struggles. Knight did in this book. In a sense he was actually broken and reborn.
"Watching" Luna blossom and evolve into a strong, confident woman was a privilege. She proves herself to be strong like her dad, Trent.
Knight and Luna grew so much throughout this book. Some aspects of the story I was suspicious would happen based on the clues from prior books. All signs pointed in one direction and I followed those signs to a logical conclusion. I'm usually disappointed when I figure out what's going to happen, but that was not the case with Broken Knight. The surprises just kept coming.
Early on in Chapter One Luna tells Knight, "The sun will rise again tomorrow." I am taking this quote with me into my daily life. Their journey hammered home a lesson I have been reflecting on a lot lately myself. Life is precious and beautiful. I deeply appreciate the work of LJ Shen for showing that in such a raw way.
