My sister has been recommending The Sainthood - Boys of Lowell High series for me to read for months now. I'm so glad I waited until it was complete to read it as a whole. And the added bonus of the novella at the end! The novella was the cherry on top. I used to think I wasn't crazy about dark romance or angst, but my sister has converted me. We joke that she's corrupted me. But I have to say I like it.

This boxset was epic. These characters are deeply involved with gangs. We meet Harlow right after her dad has died. She's struggling to handle her emotions and she decides to turn to her boyfriend, Darrow. That definitely doesn't go as planned considering she finds him in a compromising position. Darrow is the lead of the teen chapter of the gang The Arrows. After catching her boyfriend in the act she makes the decision to turn to the Saints, another rival gang, for help and in retaliation. Saint, Galen, Caz, and Theo. They come to her rescue, but at a high cost. One Harlow is very willing to pay. This book started off with a bang in more ways than one.

Review

Holy. Hotness. Batman. I thought I was prepared for the steam of this book, but I just plain wasn’t. I’m honestly surprised I didn’t spontaneously combust. Although there was tons of steam, there was also a heart-wrenching storyline that brought me to tears a few times and then had me laughing a few minutes later thanks to Ashton’s sense of humor and constant ability to say the unexpected and make everyone laugh. 

Bound Together was the perfect conclusion to the Torn and Bound Duet and was everything I hoped it would be. This duet is in my top reads of the year, no question about it.

Book 2 begins immediately where Torn Apart ended, as the delicate relationships that were being developed get torn apart. Will they forgive each other for their betrayals? How will they find their way back to each other? How will they react when the reason Drew left the NHL comes out? There’s a lot of angst in this book, not just between Mia, Ashton, Brayden & Drew, but from external sources. How they manage to deal with everything determines how they’re bound together. 

I could not put this book down. I was in the middle of reading another book and had to stop immediately as soon as I saw the ARC hit my Kindle. The only appropriate course of action, amirite? I devoured this book.

Wow! This book! I was enthralled by the concept of Mafia Casanova when Rachel Van Dyken and M. Robinson announced it months ago on their Instagram live. I signed up to get an advanced copy before there was even a blurb. The book hooked me as soon as I hit the prologue. Romeo Sinacore is this total mafia bad@$$. Monica and Rachel wrote a prologue that hits you in the face with that fact. Mind blown immediately.

As soon as I saw promo for Sinners’ Playground I knew it was right up my alley and I needed my grubby hands on it ASAP. Thanks to TalkNerdy2Me, I snagged an ARC. Dark romance, gangs and reverse harem? Check, check and check. I haven’t read any of the authors’ other books, but after this one, I’ll be hunting them all down.

Betrayal is the name of the game in Sinners’ Playground and it’s around every corner. Ten years ago, Rogue, JJ, Fox, Chase and Maverick were inseparable. They were the best of friends and the only positive things in each other’s lives. Unfortunately, one fateful night was the catalyst that changed the rest of their lives.

Rogue crawls out of what was meant to be an early grave and finds herself back in her old stomping ground. With nothing to her name except a twenty dollar bill she finds in her pocket, Rogue decides to make the best of her situation and focuses on getting her revenge on the Harlequin Boy’s for their abandonment and betrayal ten years ago. Unfortunately for her, things aren’t anywhere near the same as when she left. The boys are all grown up and now ruling the town, not to mention the fact that Maverick is no longer part of the group. Finding herself back in Fox, JJ & Chase’s company against her will, she begins working on her revenge plan. As you would expect, nothing goes to plan and a whole bunch of plot twists ensue ending in a cliffhanger. I’m so happy it didn’t end where I was expecting it or else I might’ve screamed or thrown my iPad. It does leave you wanting more and anxious for Dead Mans’ Isle.

This book took me for such a wild ride, I didn’t know what to do with myself most of the time! I loved all the characters (especially JJ) and the world building. This book felt very unique despite the genre, which I really enjoyed. I’m so excited to see where they take this series. I would say it was more of a slow burn and set up the groundwork for Rogue to end up with multiple partners, but we don’t really see that happen in Book 1. Despite that, the steam level is pretty high and the chemistry between Rogue and her boys is through the roof. This series is shaping up to be a must read! I loved every minute of it.

I was so excited to read Confidential Moments. I'm currently hooked on MM stories. To prepare myself for Confidential Moments I binged the first four books of the series. Although I enjoyed all four of the prior books, this one was my favorite of the series. 

Xavier is openly bisexual MLB player, and Mason a lawyer who is hiding his true self. Mason is struggling to come to terms with his sexuality when he meets Xavier. They have instant chemistry, but that doesn’t make their journey an easy one. These two will take you on an emotional rollercoaster.

Review

After hearing Samantha from TalkNerdy2Me rave about Shallow River, I signed up for an ARC copy and am so glad I did. Because of the subject matter and how utterly heartbreaking it was, it took me a little longer than normal to finish, but it was such a good book!

Shallow River was the most trigger-full book I’ve read to date. And that’s saying something considering what genre I read the most of. If you are not ok reading about domestic abuse or rape, steer clear of it. 

There were a lot of plot twists that I didn’t see coming that kept the storyline interesting and kept me guessing. I was rooting for River the whole book and couldn’t wait for her to get to her breaking point where she would no longer be ok with how she had been treated. 

While this book does end in a HEA, it felt secondary to River and Ryan’s relationship. Having not been in an abusive relationship, I can’t speak from experience, however the way the story is written I gained a new understanding of what it may be like. I know I’m not the same person I was when I started reading this book. I enjoyed the peek into what River & Mako’s life would be like, but I do wish there was more about them and their relationship. That part of the book felt a little rushed, but that didn’t take away from the story. To be fair, I can see how such a situation could fast-track a relationship.  

If you like dark books and don’t have any of the above-mentioned triggers, give Shallow River a read. You won’t regret it.

“What triggered you?” he asks finally, cupping a finger under my chin and jerking my chin up. My tear-filled eyes meet his steady greens.
“The knife,” I admit reluctantly.
“Why?”
I try to look away, but he jerks my chin back to him again. “Because the last time I used one, I hurt someone with it. It feels like I’m holding a weapon in my hands now, not something to cut tomatoes with.”
“Would it help if the knife became something different than a weapon?”
My brows pucker with confusion. “What do you mean? I thought that’s what I was doing by cutting tomatoes…” My voice trails off when he grabs the knife with one hand, pulls out the collar of my shirt with the other, and begins cutting the fabric down the middle.
“Mako,” I gasp, stunned. The tip of the knife grazes my skin. Not enough to break skin, but enough to leave a dull sting. When I glance up at him, his eyes are concentrating hard on the knife. He’s grazing me on purpose.
My heart rate escalates, accelerating my breath along with it. My shirt falls off my shoulders and down my arms. He cuts my bra next—I liked that bra—and then my shorts and panties. By the time he’s done, my naked body is adorned in scraps of fabric. 
“What are you doing?” I whisper, the tip of my tongue darting out to wet my dry lips. He ignores me and grabs my ankles and spreads them, setting each foot on either counter. Next, he bundles up all the scraps and throws them behind him. Distractedly, I watch them all flutter to the ground.
“Reclaiming what a knife means for you.”
